16 May - 44th Anniversary Telegraph Cove and Port Alice

Today was a slow day starting out in our AirBnb at Hyde Creek. It also rained, drizzled mostly, all day.

First thing I did was drive in to Port McNeil, 10 minutes drive away where there was an IGA grocery store to buy some flowers for my sweetheart. I left her sleeping and had to kill some time before the IGA opened at 8AM. She came out of our little house and met me on the porch as I drove in. When I gave her the flowers and a hug there was some emotion. Somehow 44 years of loving makes all this happen!

Given that it was raining and given than she had shoes with holes in them, Mary Lou searched out a store in Port McNeil which she thought might carry the kind of shoes she wished for, so we went back and they did! I have never seen anyone so happy for a pair of shoes which I've dubbed her "four wheel drive shoes"!

We drove out to Telegraph Cove because it is supposed to be one of the better areas to see whales from the shore (all of the whale boating tour companies in the area open in June or July). There was a small cafe in Telegraph Cover where we enjoyed the greatest (and hottest) hot chocolate ever. And we learned that Telegraph Cove had experienced a fire on their boardwalk (best place to view whales), in the fall. They were in the process of rebuilding.

We walked around the little town in the rain and decided we didn't need to spend anymore time outside in the rain and we were ready to move on. However, what we did learn was that the Johnstone Strait, which is the waterway beyond the entrance to Telegraph Cover, is very impressive:

Our next stop was Port Alice which we understood was a quaint little place with good whale watching....from boats. We weren't sure it was worth the drive other than it gave us a chance to continue listening to our book on tape, Gray Mountain by John Grisham.

We watched some shoot-em-up movie with an invincible hero who saves the lassy...and called it a good day!
